Celebrate MLK Jr. Day

Last January, Tucson Street was renamed to honor Martin Luther King Jr., and the very first Martin Luther King Jr. walk from the Bridges at UA Tech Park to Reid Park started a new tradition in Tucson. Join the second annual walk on MLK Jr. weekend and be treated to a day of peace, unity and togetherness. Part of the Heritage Path project, the renaming is a nod to the contributions made by the many cultural and ethnic groups in the area.

However, this is far from the only event celebrating MLK Jr. For over 30 years, the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day March and Festival has drawn a crowd to Santa Rita Park. Community leaders and elected officials gather in front of hundreds of attendees, marching to Armory Park for dancing, food, music and more.

How Will You Be Celebrating?

A favorite local event is the Freedom Bell Ringing Ceremony, organized by the MLK Jr. Day Festival Committee. Held at El Presidio Park on January 14 at 1 p.m., the bell signifies the remembrance of Dr. King’s life and work. State leaders are invited to support non-violence and mankind’s dignity.

It’s an opportunity to prioritize non-violent solutions, and it is a family-friendly event. The weekend is full of opportunities to celebrate and gather.
