Off to the Races!

The 101st Sonoita Horse Races take place May 7 and 8 at Sonoita Fairgrounds, located at 3142 South Highway 83, just a short drive from your U of A hotel. Both days, the gates (for you, not the horses) open at 10am and the daily post time is 1pm. Admission is just $20 and includes a program, live music and parking. Presented by the Santa Cruz County Fair and Rodeo Association, the live thoroughbred and quarter horse racing weekend is officially over a century old and a staple in Tucson.

Grab your fancy hat (or not), dress up or down, and enjoy a myriad of food vendors and merchandisers on site. A derby hat contest always brings out the competitive spirit, and there are mint juleps aplenty at this festive occasion. A private betting window lets you up the ante, and you might even spot yourself on television as these races are broadcast around the country.

All Bets are Off

Hors d’oeuvres are available throughout the day, and for newbies, there’s plenty of information on how to bet and which horses to watch out for. Children adore this event, from the silly names of some of the horses to the delicious food and the excuse to dress up in a whole new way. It’s also a great date or business outing!

For Tucson locals, this event is looked forward to every year. Bet safely, and you’ll be sure to have a blast as you watch the horses race off to see which one comes in first.
